Background of the Study
Science exhibitions have long been recognized as dynamic platforms that showcase scientific innovation and stimulate curiosity among students. In Ajaokuta LGA, Kogi State, science exhibitions are increasingly utilized to foster an interest in STEM subjects by providing students with opportunities to engage in interactive displays, experiments, and competitions. These exhibitions serve as a bridge between theoretical knowledge and practical application, allowing students to explore scientific concepts in a tangible and engaging manner (Folarin, 2023). By participating in science exhibitions, students are exposed to a variety of STEM-related projects and innovations that not only enhance their understanding but also spark creative thinking and problem-solving skills (Olawale, 2024). This exposure is particularly significant in environments where traditional classroom instruction may not fully capture the dynamic nature of scientific inquiry.
In Ajaokuta LGA, science exhibitions have been organized by schools, local government, and private organizations with the aim of cultivating a vibrant STEM culture among young learners. Despite the recognized benefits of science exhibitions in stimulating student interest in STEM, the practical implementation of these events in Ajaokuta LGA, Kogi State, faces several challenges. One major problem is the inconsistent quality and frequency of science exhibitions across different schools. Many institutions struggle with limited budgets and resources, which affect the organization of comprehensive and engaging exhibitions (Folarin, 2023). Consequently, students in some schools are deprived of opportunities to interact with innovative STEM projects, leading to a disparity in exposure and interest levels among peers. Moreover, the lack of standardized guidelines for organizing these events means that the educational value of the exhibitions can vary widely.
Another challenge is the insufficient involvement of industry experts and professionals who can provide mentorship and real-world insights during these exhibitions. The absence of such guidance may limit the depth of learning and diminish the potential impact on students’ career aspirations in STEM fields (Olawale, 2024). Additionally, the current format of many science exhibitions may focus more on display than on interactive, hands-on learning experiences. This limitation could result in passive rather than active engagement, reducing the overall impact on student motivation and interest in pursuing STEM subjects. Furthermore, there is a lack of systematic evaluation to measure the long-term influence of science exhibitions on academic performance and career choices. Without robust assessment frameworks, it remains unclear whether these events effectively foster sustained interest in STEM (Ogundele, 2025). Therefore, a comprehensive investigation into the challenges and benefits of science exhibitions is essential to develop strategies that can maximize their impact on student interest in STEM.

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to evaluating the impact of science exhibitions on student interest in STEM within selected schools in Ajaokuta LGA, Kogi State. It does not extend to other extracurricular STEM activities or different regions.
